October 31—Vera Galupe-Borzskh & John Relyea

A performance of Macbeth on Halloween—what could possibly go wrong? Well, nothing did, as it turned out, even though we had an ambitious intermission interview program: Mme. Vera Galupe-Borzskh and Banquo’s Ghost. If you’re not familiar with Mme Vera, tool around the internet and find out more on this doyenne of the Gran Scena Opera Company. Best moment: an impression of Lady Macbeth’s “Sleepwalking Scene” that included an impressive high d flat, sung “fil di voce” (per Verdi’s instruction for a “thread of voice”).

John Relyea (aka Banquo’s Ghost) came next, in full costume—dripping in blood! The blood was actually made from a syrup base, he explained, and took hours to remove. I was relieved he didn’t drip any on my chair. John grumbled about having to follow Mme. Vera but was eloquent and unaffected as always.
