Canadians Open Their Arms for Flute
Posted by Matt Dobkin on 12/30/2006Theaters across Canada were sold out for today’s HD transmission. And audiences up north got their money’s worth. “I will go see opera more often because of this presentation,” said one Toronto resident. An audience member in Windsor, Ontario, said, “The production itself, and the filming and the quality of sound was amazing.”
Next Saturday the Met will present a live transmission of Bellini’s I Puritani, starring Anna Netrebko. Anticipating that broadcast, a man in Toronto said, “We loved it, and we’re going downstairs to buy tickets for next Saturday!”
Here’s a shot of the Queensway theater marquee — another sold-out venue.

Here also the Magic Flute, was a great success. The theatre was full. I had to sit at the very front of the screen which put a strain on my neck because I never wanted to look at another way. I congratulate all of you who are involved in this project. It will create new opera lovers all over the world and this art will be revived. Excellent work. I hope these productions will be recorded on dvd and will also be sold.

Bellini’s “I Puritani” was well done and the audience here in Vancouver was applauding after all of the arias. The Three Acts were beautifully done. Personally, the highlight of the opera was Act Two, especially When Elvira (Anna Netrebko) was rolling on the floor near the orchestra pit while singing. This part was very touching. Again two thumbs up!!!
I really enjoyed the comments that Beverly Sills made on regards to this particular opera. All the extra features, with Renee Fleming interviewing Anna Netrebko and the backstage crew. It was like unpacking a christmas present.
Excellent!!!
